Spider-Man sequels are a mixed bag at best. Spider-Man 2 of the original Sam Raimi trilogy is perhaps one of the most beloved instalments to any franchise, but The Amazing Spider-Man 2 left a bad taste in a lot of mouths. Spider-Man: Far From Home had to identify itself as a different kind of sequel; one that surpasses expectations. And it did just that.
Far From Home is a roaring success, with a lot of laughs and a lot of heart. After the heavy and dark Avengers: Endgame, this latest film from the web-head needed to pick up the pace and bring back more fun to the MCU. With the charming Tom Holland in the lead, backed up by his talented classmates all of which have very welcomed bigger roles, this had the formula for box office gold.
The cast all around is incredibly solid, with Samuel L. Jackson actually playing a smaller role than I first thought he would. Jon Favreau is the MVP of the piece though, with Happy Hogan bringing his own form of humour and levity.
Of course, the thing that really worked about this was the introduction of Mysterio to the MCU. As one of my favourite villains I was so glad that the movie did him justice. The relationship both on and off screen, between Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Holland is touching, calling back to a mentor and student vibe we got from Robert Downey Jr with the young hero.
Without giving anything away, the way they realised the character of Mysterio was nothing short of brilliant, with the third act becoming one of my favourite in any Marvel movie.
Speaking of strong chemistry, the onscreen romance between Spidey and MJ was electric, with awkward energy. It’s an endearing pairing and a genuinely refreshing relationship! It will be great to see where these two go from here.
It’s clear that the wall crawling franchise is heading towards something even bigger though, especially judging by the after credits scenes. As well as a nice Tahiti reference for any fans of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. the post credits set things in motion that can’t be stopped. My guess is that we’ll finally see some form of the Sinister Six on the big screen!
This was a wonderful addition to this growing blockbuster franchise and deserves the 4/5 we’re giving it!
