“I get a good picture every 50 years,” was the joke that Dick Van Dyke told on the red carpet of the 2019 Golden Globe Awards. He added that he was happy to be “alive and be able to be [there].”
But when Mr. Van Dyke, 93, the dean of Disney’s acting alumni, took to the stage with co-star Emily Blunt (to introduce, Mary Poppins Returns, nominated for “Best Picture Comedy or Musical”) he found that there were a whole lot of folks happy to see him at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual gala and awards ceremonies.
The standing “O”, punctuated by DVD’s relief that he saw Carol Burnett — “My God, I know her…” — was a charming coda to what has been an amazing few months for Van Dyke, who called Mary Poppins Returns “an homage” to the original.
But Blunt, donning her reading glasses during their presentation, exclaimed that Van Dyke was indeed “superhuman” for being able to spot and read the distant teleprompter.
