This morning the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences announced the 2019 nominations for the 91st Academy Awards.
The Mouse House truly “represented” as The Walt Disney Company, with its many film divisions, accumulated 17 nominations.
The notable winner this morning had Disney execs shout, “Wakanda forever!” as Marvel’s Black Panther was nominated for seven awards.
The most distinguished honor for Black Panther (and for Disney) was the nomination for “Best Picture.” The other nominations included “Best Costume Design,” “Best Original Score,” “Best Original Song” for “All-Stars,” “Best Production Design,” “Best Sound Editing,” and “Best Sound Mixing.”
Not merely is this a monumental achievement for Marvel and Disney, but it is the first superhero movie to be nominated for “Best Picture.”
It is also bittersweet to consider the lost Stan Lee a few months ago; Lee was Marvel Comics’ creative leader for many decades — and now we are currently seeing a Marvel movie nominated for the biggest film award of the year.
Mary Poppins Returns had some Oscar magic this morning as it received 4 nominations. These nominations including “Best Costume Design,” “Best Production Design,” “Best Original Score,” and “Best Original Song” for “The Place Where the Lost Things Go.”
Over on the animation side, both Ralph Breaks the Internet and Incredibles 2 was nominated for Best Animated Feature. However, they face tough competition from Marvel’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which upset both Disney films at the recent Golden Globe Awards.
Pixar’s short Bao also received a nomination for “Best Animated Short.”
Tune in on February 24th when the 91st Academy Awards will be broadcast on ABC.
