During last night’s prime time special on ABC, “Mary Poppins Returns: Behind the Magic,” the most emotional moment — for me — was when the audience learned that Richard Sherman feels like Award-winning composers for Mary Poppins Returns Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman had picked up “the baton” from him and his brother Robert.

This morning, I carried on that thread of thought by reading “The Fantastic Music of Mary Poppins Returns” on D23.com.
Penned by Bruce Steele, the article takes us through interviews with Lin-Manuel Miranda and Emily Blunt.
“I’m a fan of Marc’s and Scott’s music of many years,” Miranda said to Steele. “I remember getting rush tickets to Hairspray right after college when it was in previews and losing my mind.
“They are so well-suited to this musical. It’s such a love letter to the Sherman Brothers.”

Blunt agreed, saying, “I think that these songs, even though you haven’t heard them before, there is something about the music that seems familiar—always a sign of a great song.”
It’s a great sign that not one piece of the marketing for this movie had knocked this Disney fan out of step as time winds down on our wait.
And it’s also heartening to hear just how much a labor of love that this movie — and its music — has been a labor
