This has been a day that I’ve been waiting for, ever since the sequel to the 1964 Disney Classic was announced back in 2015. As today, Disney have released “Trip a Little Light Fantastic” as an Audio Only version on Disney’s Vevo YouTube Channel.
Now before you read my opinion, do yourself a favour and go listen to this 7 minute long musical number:
Ok, so my initial thoughts is that this is definitely going to win an Academy Award for Best Original Score and Best Original Song, as the lyrics are imaginative, inventive and complex yet playful. All the trademarks of a Sherman Brothers medley.
However, in my opinion the tone feels more like a big Broadway number than that of the quick-paced, breath-stealing song like “Step In Time”, but it’s very close. The beautiful use of “Leary Speak” or commonly known as Cockney Rhyming Slang in the song has similar carrels to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s lyrics in the Broadway Hit Musical “Hamilton”. However, Mary Poppins Returns orchestral score and songs were written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman respectively.
Mary Poppins Returns flies into theatres on December 19th, 2019, with tickets available for pre-order today.
