Alas, we hardly knew ye… that seems to be the ongoing sentiment when it comes to the long and arduous timeline of Disney’s development of the surrounding areas of Disneyland Resort.
As Disney attempts to try and extend the “Disney Bubble” out into areas of Harbour Boulevard were met with hostility from Anaheim City Council in 2016, and then came the redevelopment and new vision of the Downtown Disney district in October 2017.
However, if you’ve followed this saga closely, then you’ll know that Disney’s proposed 4 Diamond Hotel that was to be built west of Disneyland Resort, was put on “indefinite hold” on August 15th, 2018, due to the fact that Disney had changed the location of the hotel, invalidating it from the 70% Tax Rebate by Anaheim City Council.
Disneyland Resort have now released the following official statement on the cancellation:
“We’ve taken the time to review the economics of our proposed Four Diamond hotel for Anaheim and have made the final decision to cancel the project. While this is disappointing for many, the conditions and agreements that stimulated this investment in Anaheim no longer exist and we must therefore adjust our long-term investment strategy.”Disneyland Spokeswoman, Liz Jaeger
So now it’s back over to Walt Disney Imagineering to decide the vision for Downtown Disney at Disneyland Resort, as clearly Disney have seen the success of Disney Springs in Walt Disney World, and want to replicate a similar strategy in Anaheim.
But this isn’t the only project that has now been cancelled before it started, as we’ll be discussing all this and more in tomorrow’s DSNY Newscast on YouTube.
