At D23 Expo 2017, Disney officially announced that a Tron coaster-style attraction would be coming to Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland within the coming years. However, with all of the ongoing construction preparation taking place adjacent to Space Mountain, behind the Tomorrowland Speedway, Disney have now added a billboard teasing the arrival of the new attraction.
But despite the new attraction being built on an entirely new Tomorrowland area, the construction will have a temporary affect on nearby attractions, first being the Walt Disney World Railroad. As the Locomotives will temporarily take up residence at the Main Street Station beginning in December 2018, which is similar to Disneyland Resort’s temporary pausing of the Disneyland Railroad during 2016-2017 for the development of Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge. During this period, Disney will allow guests “to get an up-close look at the railroad and take advantage of one-of-a-kind photo opportunities”.
Whereas the second attraction to be temporally affected, will be the Tomorrowland Speedway. Which will close for a portion of 2019, as the attraction’s track is slightly adjusted. But at this current time, Disney are announcing that it will reopen as the same attraction in the summer of 2019.
This is important, as it has been heavily rumoured that as part of a grander revision of Tomorrowland, the Tomorrowland Speedway would receive some minor update to better compliment the theme of the new Tron attraction, in addition to the switchover to all-electric vehicles. However, stay tuned for more on this topic as new details are released over the next year.
