The 2018 summer box office bounced back from an abysmal 2017 take, and films produced under the umbrella of The Walt Disney Company were three of the season’s top five earners.
“The mouse was mighty this summer,” Frank Pallotta of CNN reported.
“Incredibles 2 is at the top [of the earnings list] with Solo: A Star Wars Story and Marvel’s Ant-Man and The Wasp coming in fourth and fifth, respectively.
“Disney accounts for roughly a 35% market share of the overall box office this summer, according to comScore,” he explained, adding, “that doesn’t include the record opening weekend of Avengers: Infinity War,” which premiered a few days before the season began in May.”
Noting the Han Solo-standalone’s surprising placement, Pallotta pointed out, “Solo, which brought in lackluster returns for a ‘Star Wars’ film, still made $213 million.”
Asked by CNN to quantify the overall box office bounce back, Fandango’s Nikki Novak told Pallotta, “Studios are stepping up their game to compete with not only each other but with streaming services like Netflix… [and] What this summer really showed is that people still love going to the movies.”
