The star of FX’s The Americans and Felicity, Keri Russell may be headed to Episode IX in a role that seems much more involved than a cameo!
Since taking over for former Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow, J.J. Abrams has been hard at work preparing for the final episode of the Star Wars arc he had an integral hand in bringing back to the big screen with The Force Awakens. While Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), and co. are set to return, for the first time without a member of the original trio, Abrams is looking to an established actress in Hollywood to play an unnamed character to take part in the action, and it looks like he may have found her.
According to a report from Variety, Abrams is in early talks with Keri Russell to join Episode IX. Variety sources say that this specific role requires action-heavy fight scenes, suggesting that Russell will be more than a random character like Daniel Craig was in The Force Awakens. As to what her specific role will be and if she’ll be part of the Resistance or the First Order, only time will tell. It could be that they play her role close to the vest, much like they did with Benicio Del Toro in The Last Jedi.
Russell is an incredibly talented actress that has shown that she can pull off a fight scene. With her roles in FX’s The Americans, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and even the last collaboration she had with Abrams in 2006’s Mission: Impossible III, Russell proved she has what it takes to deliver when it comes to action sequences. I have no doubt she’ll nail it when it comes to the complex fight sequence Star Wars has grown accustomed to having.
The film is set to begin production towards the end of the month. Abrams is looking to cast two more roles before filming officially begins. Star Wars Episode IX is set to hit theaters on December 20, 2019.
