Over the last few years, San Diego Comic-Con achieved a “see and be seen” mystique that many, many fans of multiple genres watch very carefully. But with Disney running the D23 convention as well as Star Wars Celebration, there’s not been as much to talk about in terms of Disney news coming out of SDCC.
And, while there doesn’t seem to be a “breaking news” scenario, Disney’s official fan club, D23, will celebrate two important anniversaries.
D23, the official fan club of Walt Disney Co., will be presenting two sessions at San Diego Comic-Con for the first time. It will feature panels tied to the 90th birthday of Mickey Mouse and for the 25-year mark of “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”
The Mickey panel, set for July 20, will include voice actor Bret Iwan, animator Mark Henn and Becky Cline, director of the Walt Disney Archives, who will look at the main mouse from his debut in “Steamboat Willie” to present.
The “Nightmare” panel will include director Henry Selick, art director Kelly Asbury, editor Edie Ichioka and animator Anthony Scott.
Meanwhile, other units of The Walt Disney Company will present on their IPs, as well:
The event, which runs July 19-22, includes several Disney-driven sessions, including several involving Marvel properties and the “Star Wars” franchise. Among the subjects are “From Mickey Mouse to Mary Poppins: How Does Personality Influence Our Favorite Disney Characters?”, “Marvel’s Black Panther Costume Designer Ruth Carter: Designing the Costumes of Wakanda” and “Star Wars Mock Trial: The Court-Martial of Poe Dameron.”
